Mott MacDonald was appointed to provide specialist project
management to Thames Water Utilities Ltd for a range of important
network projects across South London. A key project within this
programme was the refurbishment of Honor Oak Park Reservoir, whilst
ensuring continued water supply. Part of this refurbishment
involved replacing the roof membrane due to peripheral
drainage.
Key highlights:
- 100-year old brick reservoir
- One of the largest service reservoirs in Europe with a storage
capacity equivalent to the daily supply to 800,000 people
- Each cell equivalent to the plan size of a football pitch
Challenges:
- The reservoir was about 100 years old, overlaid by the Aquarius
Golf Course
- Excavation of overburden and new HDPE drainage mat to fall to
perimeter
- Re-contour perimeter embankment to remove excess overburden,
and take measures to protect golf club structure and reinstate a
number of tees and greens
- Works had to ensure that only one cell was out of service at
any time, with exception of last two (smallest and largest), which
were agreed to come out together due to access difficulties with
the last cell
Works were completed within target budget and on programme for the
commencement of the summer peak demand.
Benefits:
- We brought contractor and operational teams together to
coordinate activities so that all parties could understand impacts
and influences on each others operations, primarily to minimise
delays on project
- We undertook a public relations interface with Golf Club
committee to ensure they were fully briefed and kept up to date on
project progress plus impacts on their operations
Features:
- Proactive programme and cost monitoring
- Completion of safety reviews
- Preparation and presentation of project proposals to secure
funding and approval to spend on projects
- Project risk, value and change management
- Co-ordination of the alliance teams
As part of the long-term contract full inspections will be carried
out every ten years and repairs will be undertaken if necessary.
